It’s time for our monthly poetry challenge! Have you ever heard of the Pantoum poetry form? This ancient form of poetry can trace its roots to the Malaysian folk poems of the fifteenth century. It’s composed for several quatrains, or four-line stanzas. The second and fourth line of each stanza is repeated in the next stanza as the first and third line. For Example, check out Rodgers  & Hammerstien’s “I am Going to Like it Here” from their musical, Flower Drum Song. For an added twist, your poem should use the word, “Harvest” as inspiration.

Harvest
By Emily Sauer

It’s time for the night of the Artist,
when the nights grow longer.
It’s time for the Harvest,
when the chill grows stronger.

When the nights grow longer,
his dark Majesty takes the throne,
When the chill grows stronger,
the wind blows a singular tone.

His dark Majesty takes the throne,
this lord of endings and death,
the wind blows a singular tone,
mocking a souls final breath.

The lord of endings and death,
he is the Harvester of Souls.
Mocking a souls final breath,
with cape and staff through Hell he strolls.

He is the Harvester of Souls,
the master of his macabre art.
With cape and staff through Hell he strolls,
no guilt dwells in his black heart.

The master of his macabre art,
he is ready for his night,
No guilt dwells in his black heart,
for the souls about to lose their fight.

He is ready for his night,
to collect on unpaid debts,
for souls about to lose their fight,
while Brutus, Cassius, and Judas cast their bets.

To collect on unpaid debts,
it’s time for the night of the Artist!
While Brutus, Cassius, and Judas cast their bets,
it’s time for the Harvest!
